The version history of the Android mobile OS (operating system) began with the public release of the Android beta in November 5, 2007. The first commercial version: Android 1.0, was released in September 2008. Android is continually developed by Google and the open handset Alliance, and it has seen a number of updates to it's base operating system since the initial release.
Version 1.0 and 1.1 were not released under specific code names. Android code name are confectioner themed and have been in alphabetical order since 2009's Android 1.5 cupcake, with the most major version being Android 8.0 Oreo released in August 2017 and recently released 9.0 Pie in 2019, Succeeded by Android 10.
Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android is developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance, with the main contributor and commercial marketer being Google.

It was first released as a developer preview on March 7, 2018, and released publicly on August 6, 2018. As of October 2019, 32.69% of Android devices run Pie, making it the most popular Android version.
